Timeless Lighting Portrait Lighting Styles
The established and anticipated lighting for portraits are actually well-known even before photography became popular.
You can master these basic lighting techniques to take advantage as a starting point to explore additional artistic portrait lighting placements that sets you apart from other photographers.
Light Placement
The position of your light source relates specifically with the face position of your subject. The camera location is not going to have any impact to the lighting pattern, even when you shift the camera around, the manner the light lands on the subject’s face remains constant.
Should the subject move and we intend to maintain an identical lighting pattern on the subject’s face, the light must move in relation to the face also.
Short Lighting
In short lighting, the camera’s location sees the darker, shadow area of the face first, then the light slowly becomes brighter as we move towards the rear of the face.
This lighting style is popular thanks to the slimming appearance it produces on most faces.
Except when the subject’s face is very long and narrow, short lighting can generally enhance the appearance of any subject.
Broad Lighting
Broad lighting is the reverse of short lighting, where the camera sees the illuminated section of the face first, then slowly fading to the shadows at the back.
Broad lighting emphasizes the face straight to the viewer and typically expresses a lighter and cheery individuality than a mysterious short-lit portrait.
This lighting pattern is useful with subjects with narrow or long faces or people who intend to cover up facial blemishes.
Split Light
The split light ‘halfs’ the subject’s face right in the center where the nose bridge and forehead vertical are located.
The split light can be a very striking light pattern best suited for male subjects. It is one of the best lighting pattern for featuring detailed facial features such as beards, wrinkles, etc.
You can accomplish the split light pattern by setting the light 90-degrees to the side of the subject.
Light Height
The position of your light specifically influences the direction of your shadows that appear on your subjects’ face.
As you alter the position of your key light, features such as cheekbones, nose size, eye socket depth, catch lights in the eyes, all shift noticeably.
If you place the light around the same height of your subject’s head, the lighting will become flatter and the shadows seem more linear (left-right/up-down).
As you shift the light to in-between angles, you can immediately see each and every angular characteristic of the face becoming more defined and depth is made by the shadows.
Subject Placement in Available Light Scenarios
The light placement outlined above can be applied whether you’re utilizing a portable light source such as a desk light fixture, or studio flash, or natural lighting.
The main difference between working with the artificial portable light vs. natural daylight would be the latter demands you to alter the subject’s position relative to the fixed sunlight as compared to shifting the light source around the subject.
Notice that nearly all light patterns will present the light height around the same level as your subject as the sun almost never move beneath your feet level. Normally, your key light will be higher than your subject.
